Component procurement processes will continue to become increasingly complex in the future. The trend is towards an expansion of the supplier network in order to reduce dependencies as far as possible. Purchasing at Special Purpose Machinery Manufacture has various options for organizing Provision of equipment and external procurement.
Under Provision of equipment generally refers to services that are supplied by the client and used, processed or integrated by another manufacturer for the client's own order.
External processing refers to individual operations of a production process that are commissioned for processing outside the company. In the case of single-stage external processing, one paver is commissioned; in the case of multi-stage external processing, at least 2 external paver are commissioned.
Here is an overview of three possible procurement processes and their advantages and disadvantages.
Maschinenbau XYZ GmbH purchases an assembly from manufacturer A. For economic reasons, a component of this assembly is procured from supplier B itself.
With external shipping: This component is provided directly to manufacturer A via supplier B.
With own dispatch: This component is made available to Manufacturer A as a provision via Maschinenbau XYZ GmbH.
Mechanical engineering company XZY GmbH orders a component from supplier A. The component must then be processed, e.g. anodized, by a manufacturer B. The purchasing department of XYZ GmbH orders the "anodizing" service from manufacturer B and the component from supplier A.
With external shipping: Supplier A sends the component to Manufacturer B. The latter processes (anodizes) and ships the finished component to XYZ GmbH.
With own dispatch: Supplier A sends the ordered component to XYZ GmbH. XYZ GmbH sends the component to Manufacturer B. Manufacturer B processes (anodizes) and sends the finished component to XYZ GmbH.
Maschinenbau XYZ GmbH requires an anodized component with specific drill holes. For economic reasons, all services are procured from different external manufacturers.
With external shipping: Supplier A manufactures the component. For "anodizing", Supplier A sends the component to Manufacturer B. Manufacturer B sends the anodized component to Manufacturer C, who drills the holes. Manufacturer C returns the final component to XYZ GmbH.
With own dispatch: Supplier A manufactures the component and sends it to XYZ GmbH. XYZ GmbH sends the component to Manufacturer B, who anodizes the component. Manufacturer B sends the anodized component back to XYZ GmbH, which sends the anodized component to Manufacturer C. The latter drills holes in the component. The latter drills holes in the component and sends it back to XYZ GmbH.
| External shipping | Self-dispatch | |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | Optimized shipping saves time and money. | High quality standards for components are ensured by internal goods inspection. |
| Contra | Intermediate suppliers must be absolutely reliable in terms of component quality and delivery time. A permanent supplier evaluation is indispensable here. | Delays in the procurement process due to unnecessary waiting times in logistics. Automated IT-supported processes can provide a remedy here. |
